On 5-6 November 2012, IRGC organised an expert meeting on ‘Risk Governance of Unconventional Gas Development’, held at the SwissRe Centre for Global Dialogue in Zurich, Switzerland.

Under the guidance of Dr. John D. Graham, Member of IRGC’ Scientific and Technical Council and Dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, and with support from experts from Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Engineering and Public policy, IRGC is engaged into an initiative to assess how risks associated with unconventional as development are currently being governed.

The objective is to propose guiding principles that may have relevance and utility throughout the world. IRGC plans to offer suggestions or guidance with regards to key technical and policy issues that should be addressed in the design of regulatory risk governance. The workshop involved more than 25 experts from scientific, policymaking, regulatory and industry communities, to discuss evidence-based opportunities and challenges.

These guidelines will be complementary to other initiatives in this field and include recommendations about:

– technical risk identification, assessment and management

– the need to work with others to collect and share data and experience

– addressing issues of safety, sustainability and reponsibility

– the need to get political and societal legitimacy for successfull development

– engagement of local communities and other stakeholders
